Helicopter Camera Systems

Let’s talk about a transportation tool, it is helicopter. As we know, there is a pilot inside who flies the helicopter well in the sky. But helicopter with camera system is absolutely different. It is very small helicopter, called mini helicopter which is integrated with camera. It can fly without pilot inside. It automatically flies by operating controller or remote control from the earth. It is a brilliant toy!
The helicopter camera system has developed rapidly. There are many kinds of helicopter camera system. Surely, it depends on their models and prices. The models and prices of helicopter camera systems are categorized by specifications of camera, video transmitter, receiver and helicopter size. Here are some models of helicopter camera systems:
First, helicopter with a monochrome camera and a 434 MHz video transmitter. The camera weighs less than one ounce and is about 1.5″ x 1.5″ square. It had some built-in Infrared LEDs for night time use camera’s lens is glass, not the narrow field-of-view pinhole type while the 434 MHz video transmitter is also micro-sized. It weighs about 1/2 ounce and is even smaller than the video camera. This gadget price is $200. But it merely flies 150 feet. Any movement of the transmitter usually causes complete signal loss and the video performance is so bad.
Second, helicopter with more reliable and higher quality wireless colour video camera system which is designed for home surveillance. It is the CMOS color camera but it doesn’t work well with fast moving model helicopter. Besides, the color camera’s automatic iris control has trouble with sudden brightness changes and often produces overly dark or washes out images. This broadcasted a 2.4 GHz microwave RF signal to handy cam or VCR that is connected to a stock XCam receiver.
Third, helicopter with a high performance CCD color camera and a simple antenna to the earlier system. It is compatible to the wireless video system. This helicopter uses a Panasonic color camera and X10′s XCam Anywhere video transmitter. The Panasonic camera eliminates the nagging video problems that the caused by the cheap X10 CMOS camera. Video range is over 400 feet, which is good enough for helicopter use.
Fourth, the best gadget of helicopter camera systems is with a modification of XCam2 surveillance camera, transmitter, and receiver kit is listed as “XCam2 Wireless Video Camera plus Audio/Video Receiver,” It doesn’t record the data video but send directly to the receiver on the earth. It transmits with about five millwatts (5mW) of measured RF power and provides a range of about 400 feet (line-of-sight) and perform wonderful manuver. A high gain or dish antenna design can increase the helicopter range to about 1.000 feet. The upgraded CCD camera that is used is very high quality and will continue to offer excellent performance the video systems. The price of this gadget is about $300.
Well, it’s time to fly. Then after you get to the flying field you should do a complete range check on your camera system. Just connect the camera receiver to camcorder, set it for the A/V input mode, and use its eyepiece monitor to see the transmitted video.

A 60″ set is perfect for 12-20 feet. If you have a 32 inch set, try to sit no farther than 8-12 feet away. Your receiver, DVD player, cable box, and other components should obviously be close together, but don’t place them physically on top of each other. They all get hot, especially your receiver. If you have no other choice, slide a thin piece of plywood between the components to help dispense the heat.
