If you want to buy a SLR digital camera, in a general way option are pointed to the easy and availability of the lens option in the future. Because of that, famed DSLR producer like Canon and Nikon are still be photographer’s favorite, because their SLR digital camera lenses are very complete. It is right that Pentax, Olympus, Sony (Minolta) also have complete collection of lenses, but sometimes DSLR’s owner also fixated to buy alternative lens such as Sigma, Tamron or Tokina and the truth is this alternative lenses don’t provide many options of lens with mounting except Canon or Nikon version.
DSLR camera lens divided into few types. The most simple is from it’s kind, which is fix prime lens and zoom lens. Zoom lens also divided in two, there are with constant openness (fix f/2.8, fix f/4, etc) and variable openness (it will get small when you zoom it). From the diameter size, there are two kind of SLR camera lenses, lens for SLR film/DSLR full frame, and smaller SLR digital camera lenses (for APS-C). From the technology side, lens also divided in two, with motor focus (and micro-chip) inside of lens and without motor focus (old lens). With all of these differences, it is natural if beginners photographers confuse when seeing lens that sold in the market, moreover the price have variation.
Prime/Fix lens. Talking about tele prime lens, both Canon and Nikon have complete tele lens start from 135 mm, 180 mm, 200 mm, 300 mm, 400 mm, 500 mm and 600 mm (Canon even has the 800 mm and 1200 mm), some of them are equipped with IS or VR.
Zoom lens: Wideangle. For wideangle photography needs such as landscape and architecture, Canon sensor APS-C user can only enjoy wide lens EF-S 10-22 mm f/3.5-4.5 USM, while Nikon DX user can try AF-S DX 12-24 mm f/4G IF ED lens. For Nikon Full Frame user, there is Nikon AF-S 14-24 mm f/2.8G ED. Unfortunately, Canon hasn’t provides EF lens which is suit with Nikon 14-24 mm f/2.8 yet.
Zoom lens: Standard. Happy news for Nikon DX user, because there are lot of quality Nikon DX lens stock and not too expensive (like D40 18-55 mm kit lens), those are:
• AF-S DX 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR
• AF-S DX 17-55mm f/2.8G IF ED (constant openness)
• AF-S DX 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF ED (D70 kit)
• AF-S DX 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (D90 kit)
• AF-S DX 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF ED (D80 kit)
• AF-S DX 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G VR IF ED
While for Canon APS-C user who need EF-S lens seem has to be more patience because for this moment there are only these EF-S lens (not including 18-55 mm):
• EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM (constant openness)
• EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM
• EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (non USM)
This condition become the opposite if we look at the full frame lens, where Canon has characteristic with providing two options of lens for EF series, there are fast constant openness lens (f/2.8) and economic constant openness lens (f/4), while Nikon only provides the expensive fast openness lens f/2.8.
Zoom lens: tele. We start with APS-C class or DX class. Nikon is popular with its economic tele lens, AF-S DX 55-200 mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED VR while Canon offers longer tele’s ability with EF-S 55-250 mm f/4-5.6 IS. Canon itself actually has old lens with a distance 55-200mm but not EF-S.
Those are little information about SLR digital camera lenses. Both of them appertain quite complete, no wonder that many professionals pierce DSLR camera lens from Canon or Nikon.

I have to ask you digital SLR camera recommendations. Thinking about getting an advance move from my current situation and start using digital camera. On last travel I understood that my previouscamera is simply not satisfying when shooting remote landscape and night shots. I’m only amator photo reporter, so I can’t really justify putting a crazy amount of cash on a new camera, but I need something that gives me a bit more versatility, has a powerful zoom and a decent shutter speed so I have the optiom of taking fast shots. Can anyone refer to me rough adwise? I’d like to do some equivalence shopping but not sure much where to begin with. Thank you!
